Cyclone
Larry
20th
March 2006
On
the 20th March 2006 the Innisfail district was impacted
by Category 5 Cyclone Larry. Wind gusts to approximately
300km/h wrought massive destruction to the town and region
with buildings, farm crops, businesses, homes and the
natural environment suffering in consequence.
Below
are a few photos of the resulting damage to the golf course
and clubhouse taken on the morning after. These photos
do not adequately depict the extensive damage of hundreds
of our magnificent trees being felled and broken, or of
the signage and infrastructure damaged and destroyed around
the course. The eventual cleanup, replanting and rebuilding
will take many, many months.
The
good news is that as of the beginning of May, due to the
untiring efforts of our greenkeeper and a small band of
volunteers, the course is now reopened for both
social and competition play. We urge all, visitors and
locals alike, to come and play our now "more challenging"
course and enjoy the new views and hazards
that Larry has left.
